This post will certainly be evolving and developing as we go. Video & Audio If you're having trouble streaming video or audio, consider the following tips:
Why are the video file sizes in this Coursera class larger than others?

How do I drop a class...I looked at the instructions from coursera however I can not find an unenroll link now that the class has started in the course preferences tab. Anonymous (Student) on Mon 10 Sep 2012 3:04:04 PM PDT CommentsIf you go to Your Courses on the coursera website you should see a table of all of them. In the right hand box next to each course there are two links: "view course info / un-enroll" Click un-enroll. That help?
I am having lots of problems getting into the poetry course, as I am being locked out by Chrome. I had no problems with the Listening to World Music course which has just finished. So why am I having problems with this course. Would you please help as I am worried that it takes me a very long time trying to get access to the course, as I try lots of things, and just when I am about to give up, I get through, but I don't know how. I am worried that I will not be able to do the course, or contact Coursera about the problem. The assignment date/times is also worrying if I just cannot get into the course site to complete them on time. Could you possibly solve this problem, or help in any way? Thank you. Anonymous on Mon 10 Sep 2012 3:18:46 PM PDT CommentsI, TOO, WAS UNABLE TO CONNECT WITH COURSERA ALL TOGETHER THIS AFTERNOON; SPENT TWO HOURS WITH APPLECARE TO NO AVAIL...AND THIS IS AFTER SEVEN WEEKS OF WORLD MUSIC WITHOUT A GLITCH...TRIED LATER AND EVERYTHING WORKED PERFECTLY AGAIN. I HAVE NO IDEA WHY OR WHAT HAD HAPPENED...ANYONE ELSE I WONDER??? This comment has been deleted. Everyone, calm down. Coursera was down for several hours today. Their web host's servers were down, taking the site down with them. There was nothing Coursera could have done about it, and it could have just as easily happened during your earlier classes. It only just happened to have occurred today. It's nothing to do with the specific class.
Hello, I'm not able to reply a comment in the introduction thread. It appears: "You do not have permissions to reply to this thread." What can I do? Sara Fratti (Student) on Mon 10 Sep 2012 3:24:25 PM PDT CommentsHi Sarah, is the thread is in the instructor and TAs' forum (ModPo TAs introduce themselves)? If so, students can't post to that forum. Julia Bloch (Staff)
I can't get past the first page of comments in the forums. forum. I click on "next" or a higher number and keep returning to the first page. Sandra Levine (Student) on Mon 10 Sep 2012 3:44:30 PM PDT CommentsI have the same problem and I wanted to check if my post appeared and I could not see it. But I could not go beyond that page. Terry perkins (Student) I think there are certain posts that stay at the top all the time unless (or maybe even if) you change the sort. It is sort of annoying, isn't it? Posts and threads that have been pinned by staff as important stay at the top of your screen. If you scroll down past that pinned post, however, you will see the new page. Hope this helps! Julia Bloch (Staff)
i have no idea where i am supposed to write my comments. what is the little box that says tag for? i introduced myself in that-somehow i think it was not the correct place. i do not understand your language. thread? i know that is a continuous line- but of what? i know a tag is something added on at the end- but end of what? patricia.george91@yahoo.com patricia george (Student) on Mon 10 Sep 2012 4:02:38 PM PDT CommentsDid you manage to get yourself introduced by writing in that little box that says tag? I hope someone answers your concerns because they happen to be a problem for me as well! There are two ways to post 1. Answer someone's comment directly. To do that click on "Add new Comment" right below their post. A text box will open up in which you can type your answer. 2. You can write something more general about the thread's topic. To do that, scroll down to the last post and write into that textbox. If you leave the checkmarks as they are, you will get an email every time someone posts to the thread. If it's a popular thread, that can be a lot of emails. After you have chosen the checkboxes, click "Add comment" or "Reply to thread." Tags are there so that people can find more easily the posts that interest them. It's basically a pointer to the topic(s) of the thread. Hope this helps! Helga Meier (Student)
In addition to Last Created, I would like the option for First Created. That way I could follow the thread from its inception, rather than having to navigate to the end of the "last created" list and work backwards. Is this being considered? Also, are you considering the option of not showing posts which have already been read and to which there are no comments since the thread was last visited? That would help reduce the huge number of posts one has to deal with. Also, ideally, the ability to block (reverse subscribe, not just unsubscribe) given threads that one is not interested in, again to reduce the enormous clutter which inevitably arises when 30,000 people are potentially all posting to a site (if each participant makes only one post a day throughout the course, that's over two million posts. Some better system of management seems necessary if one is not to drown in the sheer volume of posts.
Hi ModPo Team, I downloaded all of the videos posted this week to add them to my ipod, however, my ipod informed me that they were not in the right format. I had to "Create ipod or iphone version" in itunes for it to work. The only problem is each video takes 20 minutes to convert. I was wondering if it might be possible to get these converted prior to posting, if there is a demand for this. Putting the videos on my ipod is going to make this convenient for me to keep up with the course work while I'm on the bus going to work, downtime at airports, etc. Fellow classmates, please chime in if this would be convenient for you, too. This might be valuable feedback for Coursera in general if they hear that many of their students would this. CommentsThere are a bunch of free video converters out there, many specifically aimed at ipod formats. Just do a Google or other search. Helga Meier (Student) Thanks Helga. I've been able to convert them in itunes, it's just time-consuming. If they were converted by the ModPo staff prior to upload, it could potentially save hundreds/thousands of students the time it would take for each student to convert them individually. Assuming there is a demand for this, of course. Add my vote for a universally usable format as well. Thank you!
Hi! I wanted to ask if the lecture videos are going to be captioned (in English, of course)? Thank you in advance! CommentsThey are already captioned in English. Sorry! It was just the Introduction video. Thank you!
What does it mean when a thread is flagged? Helga Meier (Student) on Mon 10 Sep 2012 7:27:57 PM PDT CommentsWhen you hover your mouse cursor over the flag (or other emblems) it will tell you what it means. The blue flags mean that either Al or one of the Teaching Assistants have replied to that thread.
Looks like our enthusiasm brought down GoDaddy! Well, that's saying something! Aren't we powerful? LOL Glad to know Coursera was on it and got us up and running and I hope those who posted with connection problems have found them resolved!
Hello guys, I voted on someone's comment in a thread but it seems that it counted as a minus one (-1) vote. I think I must have clicked the wrong arrow and didn't see it. How can I undo this? Thank you in advance. Lucas SantAnna (Student) on Mon 10 Sep 2012 8:12:33 PM PDT CommentsIn my experience, you can't change the vote, unfortunately. I've done the same thing accidentally, Lucas. ~M Anonymous
I am obviously computer illiterate- karen schaffner (Student) on Mon 10 Sep 2012 10:14:56 PM PDT CommentsYou´re not illiterate. The thing is that there are so many threads that it is easy to get lost. You have to look in "discussion forum" then you choose "general discussion". There is your post.
I still can't find the posts re: The Brain or the one I wrote as an intro - both written before I contacted you. Your help is most appreciated. karen schaffner (Student) on Mon 10 Sep 2012 10:35:29 PM PDT CommentsI didn´t find your message anymore. There was where I told you. I think it was removed or put in another place but I can´t find it. Every time when you write something you have to look in which folder do you write. Sorry! Helga Meier (Student)
Ok, so how do I link a set of comments from a thread? I want to reference the ones above concerning conversion of video for iPad to a new thread I have created to discuss such issues Technical issues, problems, opportunities for iPad, phone tablets etcAs you can see, it is easy to link a thread - but I don't want to link all of it. Thanks techno's. Peter D Cox (Student) on Mon 10 Sep 2012 11:34:15 PM PDT CommentsAs far as I can tell you can't link to a single comment, only the thread... Anonymous
And a third question, sorry! How to organise ones own threads/comments? Many forum programs offer the facility to see 'all posts' 'my comments' or something similar so you can keep track and go right back to a previous remark/thread. At least a search by author (I can't seem to do that?). Tracking a thread by email ends up with lots of email that isn't very helpful ..... Peter D Cox (Student) on Mon 10 Sep 2012 11:51:48 PM PDT Commentsdoesn't look like Coursera allows that function Anonymous

I have posted a couple of comments but notice that no little vote option appears by my comment. Why is that? Carol (Student) on Tue 11 Sep 2012 12:26:14 AM PDT CommentsBecause you can't vote for yourself, maybe? But I've given you one :) Peter D Cox (Student) Thanks, Peter. The obvious is so often so difficult to see---and so embarrassing when pointed out! Carol (Student)
Hi Christopher. You're working hard I see! I have a suggestion that I don't quite know what to do with, and you know the rule. IF you don't know the answer and your fingers are on the keyboard, ask IT. They know everything. So, here's my suggestion: If you want to post something written in your own language (not English) put the word for your language, in your language, in your post so that others who speak that language can find those posts using the search box at the top of each forum page. Example: "Sprache: Deutsch", "Мова: Ukrainien" -or- "Langue: Français" This came up in the Post Your Own Poetry forum where someone wanted to post some poems of hers but didn't because they are all in her native language. If you like the idea, could we have an announcement? You're welcome to use my text above if it's easier ... :-)Thanks and happy Tuesday!
One for the Coursera designers? When you post a comment to a thread you most definitely do not want to go back to the very top of the thread (often miles away) when you click the reply to button. You always, surely, want to be where you have just left off so as to continue down the thread. Or maybe there's something I don't get :( Peter D Cox (Student) on Tue 11 Sep 2012 1:28:41 AM PDT
Chris, thanks for the clear instructions (I could have used you when I was trying to decipher the first course I took!) Two quick and unrelated questions. First, is there a way to download video and audio lectures, so that I'm not tied to computer with respect to keeping updated (I'm already behind and it's only day 2!), as Daniel has already noted above (thanks, Daniel!)? Second, and I've addressed this issue with Coursera, but I've received no reply (which means, I understand it's not your bailiwick, but if you can reach them easier, thank you SO much): I used a pseudonym to sign up (well, really my initial), but at the end of the course, I'd like any certificate to be in my full name. As of yet, there's no way to sign up with your full name and use a 'nickname' in the threads, except if one just posts anonymously. I don't want to do that regularly, because I think part of the process is getting to know our fellow students. Again, I know this issue isn't in your area, but given that I don't think it's a hard thing for Coursera to do, I hoped you might have a comment or an idea. Many thanks! ~M Anonymous on Tue 11 Sep 2012 6:21:43 AM PDT
I think I opted out of all emails instead of just thread emails. What do I do? Susan Weisgrau (Student) on Tue 11 Sep 2012 7:33:00 AM PDT CommentsTry going back to your name in the upper right-hand corner and choosing Course Preferences, then choosing "YES, I would like to receive forum notifications." Julia Bloch (Staff)
I am still befuddled. How do I stop hundreds of emails which are now appearing on my personal inbox? I work from home and use the email for business. HELP! The volume of emails is driving me the proverbial wall. karen schaffner (Student) on Tue 11 Sep 2012 8:31:36 AM PDT CommentsTo unsubscribe from all threads: Anonymous
How come I'm getting endless emails telling me about comments added on the discussion forums? I don't need them. CommentsLook at the top right of your screen for a blue "unsubscribe" button and click it whenever you post to a forum. To unsubscribe from all threads: Anonymous
thanks Marvin - what do I click on the bottom of the box I am writing in? Do I click the "Subscribe to this thread at the same time button" or unclick it? Thanks again, in advance. Karen karen schaffner (Student) on Tue 11 Sep 2012 8:43:58 AM PDT Commentsf.i. I have Unsubscribed to this Discussion, in general; so I shouldn't received any more comments made to it; but, at the bottom of this comment (my comment) there is a box ticked Subscribe to this thread at the same time. I 'believe' this means I will get copies of comments to This Thread alone & not the rest of the commentary. In sum, if you don't want to see ALL the other postings in this Discussion, click Unsubscribe at the Top of the page. There are Multiple Threads within a Discussion. If you don't want to see postings of This Thread uncheck the box.
My husband signed up for a history course with Coursera which begins next week. When I first went to the site it was in his name with his email address. I changed the name and email address but it would not accept the password I used or change the password (so that I don't know what it is). Now the site has my name at the top. However I subscribed to one of the comment groups and comments are now going to my husband's email address - 20 at a time he says. I am not getting them. When I try to go online to find or change my password it says my email address is not recognized. But when I try to sign up again it says that I'm already signed up. How do I resolve this. Could it be that my wireless connection is just to slow to watch video? Also is there a way to automatically download the videos?
Make sure your operating system is up-to-date (ie. Windows Update, Apple Software Update, etc.).
You do not consider Linux-Debian as a possibility? Victoria Rivero
How do I get rid of a tag I added by accident. I don't even know what a tag is! It is on the general discussion forum where we are invited to introduce ourselves. Right at the top--it says Paula. I am not very computer savvy and find this website hard to negotiate. Can you get rid of that tag?
My only problem with the course forum so far is that, especially in a course this HUGE, it takes a search to find posts and replies, and even if the search finds them, mthere is no way to jump to that post or reply. Right now there are 29 pages of replies to the getting to know you post: the only way to revisit anything is to re-skim the whole darn thing... Am I missing something?
I travel all the time outside the US, most often to lesser developed countries. More often than not, because of internet problems (I think), I cannot view videos without turning a 20 minute video into one of 60 minutes, never mind hardly seeing the faces.
Can you also make an audio tape for listening? I seem to be able to listen without too much of a problem. But video viewing is impossible.
I don't the the unsubscribe button at the top of the thread. what am i doing wrong?
i agree with clarke. i think so.
URGENT SOS HELP I HAVE OVER 400 THREADS IN MY MAILBOX. I HAVE TO DELETE ALL OF THEM....STOP THIS AT ONCE PLEASE...SYLVIA HARON...

I've clicked 'unsubscribe' on all of the forums - and yet I'm still getting emails. I there a tiime delay?
Sylvia, how to stop them all…..go to the very top of your Screen, under your Name you will find a list of options: Courses Profile Settings Course Preferences Logout….if you choose Course Preferences you will find Email Settings, where you can select to STOP all notifications.
I just watched the two part video on "The Brain Within its Groove" and at the end of both parts there was no audio. Anyone else have this issue?
I would like to know why some of the names of commenters are in black with the word student in parentheses and others are links without the word student. I too wonder why there are participants listed as Anonymous.
Pamela, it all depends on whether they have a shared profile or not. If they do, their name will just be a link. If their profile is private, then their name will be in black with their "status" in parentheses after it. As for why there are posts by "Anonymous", when you go to make a post in the boards, there's a box to check to make your post anonymous if you wish. You can see that for yourself.
